In May of 2017 Dedalo Living was commissioned to make two couture pieces. The rugs, completed in August of 2017, are a tour de force of innovation, design and craftsmanship.
With more than 400 hours of technical work, leather work, embroidery and hand piecing, the rugs are revolutionary in both technique and style.
The designer wanted to produce one-of-a-kind pieces that would bring the latest in couture fashion to interiors. The choice of bespoke embroidery allowed us to express a high level of detail that has never before been seen on hair-on-hide rugs.
Both rugs were inspired by the designer’s love of Africa. The commissioned pieces reflect a whimsical interpretation of the Circle of Life and life in the jungle. Rich and vibrant colors, a hallmark of Dedalo’s Italian fashion heritage, capture the spirit of Africa’s colorful heritage.
Circle of Life
This 10-foot round rug expresses the Circle of Life and animal hierarchy with lions, giraffes and elephants stretching through the plains, vying for kingship. The Lion, King of the Jungle, naturally takes victory, depicted with a regal wing span. Curly ivy leaves and flitting butterflies circle the piece with delicate femininity.
Technique: This piece is an exceptional example of fashion embroidery technique translated to interior design. Dedalo constructed the various elements in CAD for both piecing and embroidery, ensuring each line and stitch expressed the story. Embroidery was used to depict facial expressions, as well as the curling ivy and the Lion’s extended wingspan. Detailing of this nature both stylistically and technically has never been executed on hide rugs.
This piece, a 12 x 14-foot rectangle, expresses the chaotic yet nurturing jungle environment. Four expansive African trees offer shelter to the animals—giraffes, kudus and butterflies—that play hide-and-seek while flowers weave throughout the mural. Foliage, shown in a palette of berry blues, provides an organic geometric pattern.
Technique: This piece exemplifies complicated hand-piecing and couture embroidery with bold colors and stylistic detailing across the flowers. More than 1,000 unique pieces are carefully fit together by Dedalo’s Italian artisans.
